Advising an impressionable youth, Christopher Hitchens wrote, “No one can be entirely sure that any solution he proposes will not contain its own woes and pains by way unintended consequences” (Letters to a Young Contrarian [Basic Books, 2001], 62). That thought brings to mind this gem, spoken when circumstances forced a man to rightsize his dream:
No matter how much of a utopia you build for yourself, something always happens that you hadn’t reckoned on.
